Demon: A Memoir by Tosca Lee

Tosca Lee’s work, Demon: A Memoir is a story surrounding the character of Clayton, or Clay for short, and his interactions with a demon.  This spirit has a story to tell and Clay needs to hear it.  His career as a book editor may depend on it.  But what does this spirit want to tell Clay?  Everything.

Clay is recently divorced and lives his life day to day like any of us, but one night changes everything.  That night he receives a notice for an appointment by one L. who never shows up, but as Clay leaves work and stops for a bite to eat a man greets him and tells him that there is very little time left.  This man is not just a man however, but a fallen angel, or demon, called Lucian.  Lucian tells Clay, “I’m going to tell you my story, and you’re going to write it down and publish it.”  With such simple words begin a grand adventure into the story a demon has to tell you.  Lucian meets Clay again and again, and Clay cannot seem to do anything but write everything down he hears and everything he sees in each meeting.  Lucian weaves a tale of heavenly perfection and glory and the rebellion that blackened Eden, of the creation of humankind and God’s ultimate sacrifice for the salvation of all who choose him.  Clay realizes however, that it is not Lucian’s story he is writing down but his own.

Tosca Lee tells us this story within a story in such an elegant manner, a great compliment to the work of the great C.S. Lewis when he wrote The Screwtape Letters.  It is the tale of deception and of the glory of God in all of his works.  The story of all of our failures and temptations and how yet our God chooses to love us yet as we do not deserve it at all!  Many a reader will read this book and come out finally knowing what a demon really is.  It is one of the best descriptions of what a demon is within our world and also seems to recall the imagery of J.R.R. Tolkein in his epic tale The Silmarillion.  I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about demons, but more importantly to those looking for a good read.  I enjoyed Demon: A Memoir from start to finish, and was enthralled by the storytelling ability Tosca Lee has.  Look for this book the next time you go to your library or to a local bookstore and pick it up for yourself!

Tosca Lee is the author of the critically acclaimed Demon: A Memoir, a ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year silver award winner and 2008 Christy award finalist. She earned her degree in English from Smith College, is an international consultant, and was first runner-up to Mrs. United States.

  1. Awesome review! It was an awesome book! The way Tosca writes is very unique. My copy of Havah by Tosca just arrived in the mail two days ago and I can’t wait to read it. All the reviews i have read are wonderful. I am also very excited for Iscariot (Tosca) and the Forbidden Trilogy (Tosca with Ted Dekker) next year.
